By an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988, Jamia Millia Islamia, which was founded in 1920 in Aligarh, United Provinces, India, was elevated to the status of Central University. Jamia and Millia are Urdu words that signify “university” and “national,” respectively.
The story of its conversion from a limited educational establishment in pre-independence India to a central university in New Delhi—offering interconnected education from nursery to research in specialized areas—is a tale of dedication, conviction, and vision of a people who worked against all odds to see it grow step by step. Sarojini Naidu, India’s nightingale, described how they “constructed the Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice.”
Conception
Two prominent tendencies joined hands and contributed to the development of Jamia during the British colonial administration. The first was anti-colonial Islamic agitation, while the second was the pro-independence yearning of the politically radical element of India’s Muslim intellectuals trained in the West. With Mahatma Gandhi as a motivator, the two movements converged in the political atmosphere of 1920. The Khilafat’s anti-colonial action and the Indian National Congress’s non-cooperation campaign served to channel creative energy and shape Jamia Millia Islamia. “One of India’s great educational institutions,” according to Tagore.
A handful of nationalist instructors and students left Aligarh Muslim University, denouncing its pro-British leaning, in response to Gandhiji’s appeal to boycott all educational institutions funded or managed by the colonial administration. Maulana Mohamed Ali, Maulana Mehmud Hasan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Hakim Ajmal Khan, and Abdul Majid Khwaja were some of the most notable participants of this movement. Hakim Ajmal Khan, the first chancellor of Jamia, was chosen on November 22, 1920. Allama Iqbal could not accept the offer provided through Gandhiji, thus Mohamed Ali Jauhar became Jamia’s first Vice-Chancellor. A syndicate was elected, and a syllabus subcommittee was established.
On Friday, October 29, 1920, Maulana Mehmud Hasan, a well-known freedom fighter and Muslim scholar, lay the cornerstone of Jamia Millia Islamia in Aligarh. The list of its early professors is outstanding, especially given the harsh conditions in which it began.
Crisis
Jamia, which sprang out of a political crisis, appeared for a while to be doomed to perish in the crucible of India’s independence war. It took part in the Bardoli resolution and deployed volunteers all around the country to inspire people to fight for the country’s liberation. Many of the colonial British government’s professors and pupils were soon imprisoned. Gandhiji ended the non-cooperation movement in 1922. Mustapha Kemal Ataturk announced the end of the Khilafat in 1924, even as its professors and pupils were being liberated.
Jamia was thrown into a major predicament all of a sudden. With the conclusion of the non-cooperation and Khilafat revolutions, some considered it had accomplished its objective, while others said it had lost its raison. The Khilafat’s small financial aid also ran out. Jamia’s eventual collapse became an almost certain prospect as even influential individuals began to abandon it.
Jamia Moves to Delhi
Jamia represents the phrase “when things get rough, the tough get moving.” With the crisis looming, Gandhiji backed the initial trio of Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, and Abdul Majeed Khwaja, who moved Jamia from Aligarh to Karol Bagh in New Delhi in 1925. “The Jamia has to run,” Gandhiji encouraged the people of Jamia. I’ll walk around with a begging bowl if you’re concerned about its finances.” Jamia adopted Gandhiji’s constructive self-reliance agenda, favoring Charkha and Takli as preferred professions.
Despite Gandhi’s efforts to acquire financial support for Jamia, the risk of assisting a Congress-backed organization during the British Raj deterred many interested donors. The ‘Muslim Oxford,’ Aligarh Muslim University, was likewise seen as a danger by Orthodox Muslims. Hakim Ajmal Khan covered the majority of Jamia’s costs out of his own pocket during those trying times. Dr. M.A. Ansari and Abdul Majeed Khwaja traveled over India and the world, discussing the necessity of Jamia and raising donations for this noble cause. Their combined efforts were successful in averting a near-certain collapse.
Resurgence: The Second Trio
Dr. Zakir Husain, Dr. Abid Husain, and Dr. Mohammad Mujeeb, three classmates studying in Germany at the time, agreed to serve Jamia after much thought. Dr. Zakir Husain, a natural and charismatic leader with a degree in Economics from the University of Berlin, was a natural leader. Dr. Abid Husain holds a doctorate in education. Mohammad Mujeeb, a journalism student at Oxford and a printmaking student at German, was a committed and dedicated reformer. The three companions boarded the Norddeutscher Lloyd liner SS Derfflinger in early February 1926 on their way to Jamia.
Dr. Zakir Husain was offered a salary of Rs. 100 at Jamia. His two other European pals were each offered Rs 300. Abid Husain and Mohammad Mujeeb willingly cut their salary to Rs. 100 apiece, realizing that making payments was beyond Jamia’s meager means. Dr. Zakir Husain decreased his own income to Rs. 80 as a result of his friends’ dedication. The creation of the extremely successful evening sessions for adult education was one of the first initiatives they made. In October 1938, this movement was renamed Idara-i-Taleem-o-Taraqqi. It continued to grow in popularity to the point that separate rooms were required to accommodate the pupils.
Hakim Ajmal Khan was born in the year 1928 and died in the year 1928. Because Hakim Sahib had been supporting the majority of Jamia’s financial demands, the second financial crisis began. Dr. Zakir Husain, who became Vice-Chancellor of Jamia in 1926, took over the administration of the university. To help Jamia overcome its repeated difficulties, a group of young Jamia instructors led by Dr. Zakir Husain pledged to serve the university for the next twenty years at a salary of Rs. 150. Jamia’s Life Members were this group’s name. (The second set of Jamia teachers made the same vow in 1942.)
In 1928, Jamia’s Printing and Publications department was split in three, with Prof. Mohammad Mujeeb, Dr. Abid Husain, and Mr. Hamid Ali overseeing the newly founded Jamia Press at Darya Ganj, Urdu Academy, and Maktaba Jamia, respectively.
Shifting to the New Campus
The foundation stone for a school building was set on March 1, 1935, in Okhla, then a sleepy hamlet on Delhi’s outskirts. All Jamia institutions were relocated to the new campus in 1936, with the exception of Jamia Press, the Maktaba, and the library. Jamia’s primary focus was on developing cutting-edge educational techniques. In 1938, a teacher’s college (Ustadon ka Madrasa) was established as a result of these efforts. Dr. M.A. Ansari died in 1936 at the age of 76. Jamia Millia Islamia was founded on June 4, 1939, and became a recognized society on June 4, 1939.
Jamia’s reputation as a pioneering educational institution grew, and dignitaries from around the world began to pay visits. Some of them included Husein Raouf Bey (1933), Cairo’s Dr. Behadjet Wahbi (1934), and Turkey’s Ms. Halide Edib (1936). Jamia attracted foreign workers who were captivated by the city. Ms. Gerda Philipsborn (also known as Aapa Jaan) was a German lady who served Jamia for many years.
Dr. Zakir Husain invited theologian and liberation fighter Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi (1872-1944) to reside in Jamia in 1939. In Jamia, he established Baitul Hikmah, an Islamic Studies school dedicated to spreading Shah Waliullah’s beliefs. The days of unbreakable optimism in the face of depravity, when they had a desire to build but nothing with which to build, were remembered as “days of delight” by Zakir Husain, later the President of India.
Mr. and Mrs. Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Liyaqat Ali Khan were all on one side of Dr. Zakir Husain, the vice-chancellor, on the morales; Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Asaf Ali, and Sir C Rajagolapachari were on the other side.
Independence and After
The riots that erupted in northern India during the partition impacted Jamia, although not on its campus. Its campus remained “an oasis of tranquillity in the Sahara” of communal bloodshed, according to Gandhi. Arson destroyed seven lakhs worth of books at Maktaba Jamia.
Jamia continued to develop as a unique academic institution after the country’s independence. During their journeys to New Delhi, many international dignitaries made a point of stopping by Jamia Millia Islamia. Marshal Tito (1954), Afghan King Zahir Shah (1955), Saudi Crown Prince Faisal, Iranian King Reza Shah Pahlavi (1956), and prince Mukarram Jah were among those who paid a visit to Jamia (1960).
Dr. Zakir Husain, who had taken over as Vice President of India by that time, became Jamia’s Chancellor after Mr. Abdul Majeed Khwaja’s death in 1962. (1963).
Deemed to be University
The Jamia was designated a “deemed to be University” by the University Grants Commission in 1962. The School of Social Work was founded in 1967 shortly after that. To commemorate Dr. Zakir Husain, who died in 1969, Jamia established the Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies in 1971. The Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering program began in 1978, while the Humanities and Languages, Natural Sciences, Social Science, and State Resource Center faculties were established in 1981. It founded the Centre for Training and Career Training and the Mass Communication Research Facility in 1983. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology, as well as the University Computer Centre, was created in 1985. In 1987 and 1988, respectively, the Academic Staff College and the Academy of Third World Studies were founded.
Central University
Jamia Millia Islamia was designated as India’s central university in December 1988 by a Special Act of Parliament. Education, Humanities & Languages, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences are among the faculties listed on the website. In 1989, a new Faculty of Law was added to Engineering & Technology. Since then, a slew of additional UG and PG courses and programs have been introduced.
The Jamia contains a variety of learning and research centers, such as the AJK-Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), the Academy of International Studies, and others, in addition to its nine faculties. In the sphere of information technology, the Jamia has also made strides (IT). It provides a variety of undergraduate and graduates IT programs. In addition, the Jamia features a campus-wide network that connects many of its departments and offices.
