About 15 women are awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar every year. The government provides a certificate and an incentive of Rs 2 lakh to the selected woman for this award.

This award is given to encourage women to participate in various fields and make their mark. It is the endeavor of the government to give recognition to the achievements of women and to honor them for this.

Awards will generally not be awarded posthumously; Except in cases where the death has occurred after being submitted to the Ministry in the manner prescribed in these guidelines.
To give this award, a woman will be selected who:

- Promoted skill development of women in traditional and non-traditional sectors;
- infrastructure facilities for rural women;
- Promoted concretely and significantly for safety and security, health and welfare, education, skill development, life skills, respect and dignity of women, etc. in non-traditional fields like science and technology, sports, arts, and culture.
